Within the intent of the prohibition, there are three [points]: first, to conform with [pure] conduct; second, to progress toward the Path—the above two are for one's own benefit; the third is converting others. The "four equals" are loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity, also known as the four immeasurable minds. "Criticism and slander" refers to the origin of the precept: when lay devotees came to pay homage, they saw [the act] and collectively censured and disparaged it. Śramaṇas of the present age do not understand cause and effect, and frequently take living beings' lives to nourish their bellies: scraping scales and plucking feathers, roasting over fires and boiling in water; indulging solely in luscious and rich meats, how could they think of the pain and anguish! Holding the knife and chopping block themselves, they are truly butchers clad in the robes [of the Dharma]; routinely devouring blood and flesh, they are verily bald-headed rākṣasas. Gentlemen in the secular realm keep feelings of commiseration in their hearts; how can world-renouncing practitioners of the Path be as cruel and obstinate as this? We deeply pray that future students will contemplate this and strive earnestly. Though you obtain a moment's gratification, what will you do when bringing down calamities across ten thousand kalpas? How lamentable!
