Sixty-eight. (The Buddha was in Śrāvastī; Ariṣṭa held the pernicious view and said that sensual desires do not obstruct the path; the bhikṣus admonished him but he would not abandon it; the Buddha ordered a jñaptidvitīyā-karmavācanā to admonish him, and then rebuked him and prohibited it.) Sensual desire is base and vile; asserting that an obstacle is not an obstacle and stubbornly holding to it without abandoning it is therefore called a pernicious view, also called evil heresy. Although it is merely spoken by mouth, it wounds and damages the correct teaching, leads the blind and foolish astray, opens the gates to bad destinies, and causes others to fall into them; the harm is extremely severe, so it must be especially prohibited and cut off.
