八十三。（佛在舍衛，跋難陀非時入村，與居土樗蒲，故制。）《明了疏》，二意故制：一恐作羯磨，不知所至，則惱眾僧；二令不自在入白衣家。

[Precept] Eighty-three. (The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. Upananda entered the village at an improper time and played dice with a householder; hence it was prohibited.) The *Vinayadvāviṃśatividyā-śāstra Commentary* states that it was prohibited for two reasons: first, out of fear that when a karma is to be performed, not knowing where he has gone would disturb the Saṃgha; second, to prevent him from entering lay households at his own convenience.
