初戒。（佛在舍衛，世儉穀貴，人多餓死；蓮華色尼入城乞食，三日並施比丘，遂餓在道，人譏故制。）

The First Precept. (The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. The times were scarce and grain was expensive; many people starved to death. The nun Utpalavarṇā entered the city to beg for food, and for three days gave it all to a bhikṣu; she then starved by the road. People criticized this, so he laid down the prohibition.)
