戲笑戒。（譏云不慚戲笑如獼猴。）已前諸戒，並謂入聚落中乖越威儀，不生世善；若在伽藍，豈得不爾！但緣起在俗，故結為戒。時開寺內，非是常途。安有處寺而容縱放！《教誡律儀》，並明寺內威儀之行。義準，諸戒內外通犯；學者思之，勿謂無過。

The precept against joking and laughing. (The censure says, 'Shamelessly joking and laughing like monkeys.') The preceding precepts all refer to departing from the comportment when entering settlements, thereby failing to engender worldly goodness; yet how could it not be so in a monastery as well! It was only because the originating incident occurred among the laity that the precept was formulated. When an exception is occasionally granted within the monastery, it is not the ordinary rule. How could one dwell in a monastery and allow for indulgence! The Instructions on Vinaya Deportment all clarify the practice of comportment within the monastery. By doctrinal extension, these precepts apply universally both inside and outside; students should reflect on this and not think there is no fault.
