In the fifth, the first subsection: A wholesome mind is provisionally explained in terms of remedying lust; the rest are all modeled on this. 'Pure practice free from defilement' refers to contemplation of impurity. 'An unwholesome mind' means seeking fame, reputation, and material gain, or the pleasant retributions of humans and gods. However, in the preface to the precepts, 'reputation, material gain, and after death being born in heaven'—that refers to an invisible response to maintaining the precepts, not an evil seeking. 'Morally neutral' provisionally cites madness and sleep; not directing the mind toward good or evil and merely observing [the precepts] vaguely are all subsumed under the morally neutral.
