In the Sarvāstivāda School, the first section: the text lists three kinds, all differing from the Dharmaguptaka. As for "not generating anew," the three [grades of] precepts are permanently fixed; like receiving the five with an inferior mind, and receiving the ten with a middling mind—the original secular [five] remain inferior, and only the remaining five are superior; receiving the ten with a middling mind and receiving the great [precepts] with a superior mind is also like this. It says: as for the prātimokṣa precepts, there is no obtaining them anew; if with a minimal-grade mind one receives and obtains the five precepts, and later with a middling or superior-grade mind receives the ten precepts, the previously obtained five precepts do not increase in superiority; only with respect to the latter five precepts does one obtain increase. As for "not re-receiving," that school posits that a single reception is fixed; since they are not generated anew, receiving them further does not increase them, hence it is not posited. Although the text below only clarifies the full precepts, the intent applies similarly to the five, eight, and ten. Because the five are prescribed for the duration of life, and the eight are limited to a day and night, even if received day by day, viewed within that single day, they cannot be re-received. As for "not re-violating," this is stated based on the same class in the first chapter [pārājika]. Relying on the original determination: "original" refers to the initial reception on the platform. Hence, it is cited below as proof. In the Mahāvibhāṣā, a young bhikṣu obtains the superior-grade precepts because he is able to arouse a superior-grade mind to receive them; an arhat bhikṣu obtains the inferior-grade precepts because he previously generated an inferior-grade mind to receive them, and later they do not increase in superiority. Question: Since an arhat has generated the concentration-concomitant and path-conjoined, how could they not increase? If the precepts definitely do not increase, how could he attain the noble path? Contemplate this in this manner.
