Next, in the conditions for nuns, it first marks the topic. If one relies on Dharmasatya's karmavācanā, the rules for nuns are fully complete; one thus knows that from the Cao Wei onward, they were received from a single saṃgha alone. This accords with the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya where eleven saṃghas receive it: besides the ten monks, one nun is needed as an upādhyāyikā before it can be conducted; in principle there must have been Western nuns arriving here earlier. Now speaking of "the initial conditions", it is merely the beginning of the reception of the precepts from the two saṃghas. From "Arriving..." downward, it cites and demonstrates; first, demonstrating Guṇavarman granting their request, the text again having three parts: first, recounting Guṇavarman's arrival from the west. Yuanjia was the reign era changed under Emperor Wen of the Song, lasting thirty years in all. Guṇavarman is translated here as "Armor of Merit." Yangzhou was the capital of the Song (today's Shengzhou). Later, in the garden in front of Nanlin Monastery, an ordination platform was constructed to receive the precepts, which was the beginning of establishing an ordination platform in this land. From "Further..." downward, the second part recounts the origin of the initiation, first explaining the Western nuns' questioning in surprise. According to the biography, the nuns Huiguo and others of Yingfu Monastery conveyed the Western nuns' words to inquire of Varman. From "Varman..." downward, Varman answers and explains; this can be understood. From "The various..." downward, the third part recounts their harboring doubts and seeking reception, first explaining the Song nuns' devout request. Below, it shows Varman granting permission. Next, from "Reaching the tenth year..." downward, it says Saṃghavarman completed it in his stead: first, recounting Saṃghavarman's arrival from the west. He was a person of India. From "Initially..." downward, it next clarifies the implementation of the rite, first showing the prior circumstances. Guṇavarman died in the ninth month of the tenth year. From "Shortly..." downward, it explains the nuns filling the required number. "Shortly" means not long after, namely the eleventh year. Together with the former ones there were eleven in total; this is spoken with reference to those officially employed, hence it says "numbering ten or so."
