Citing proof: this is from the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra. The first two lines trace the branches back to the root. The lower two lines clarify that abandoning the root leaves no branches. Question: In the present treatise on the essence of action, is it the mind-king or the mental factor of volition? Answer: Earlier it said "karmic volition"; why is there any need to doubt? If one examines the text of the treatise, the three karmas are all mind; the statement "apart from mind there is no volition" seems to point to the mind-king. However, the king and the mental factors are divided as substance and function: from substance arises function, and function is precisely substance; in discussing the creation of karma now, it is spoken of in terms of function. Therefore the Karma Commentary says: "Speaking of mind does not necessarily mean volition, but speaking of volition must mean mind." This should be carefully examined.
