懺是能懺之心,六聚即所懺之罪,法謂懺之軌度。梵云懺摩,此翻悔往;有言懺悔,梵華雙舉。準《業疏》云:取其義意謂不造新;懺謂止斷未來非,悔謂恥心於往犯;有將懺字訓首訓鑒,義雖通得,華梵須分。然懺通化制及以理事,今此且據制教事行以為篇目。
'Repentance' (chan) is the mind capable of repenting; 'the six classes' are the offenses that are repented; 'methods' refers to the formal procedures of repentance. In Sanskrit it is kṣamā, translated here as 'regretting the past'; some say chan-hui ('repentance and regret'), combining both Sanskrit and Chinese. According to the Karma Commentary, it states: 'Grasping its meaning, it signifies not committing anew; chan means stopping and severing future wrongs, and hui means feeling shame in one's mind over past violations.' Although some gloss the character chan as 'heading' (shou) or 'reflecting upon' (jian), and the meaning is admissible, Sanskrit and Chinese must be distinguished. Repentance, however, applies universally to both the teaching of transformation and the disciplinary teaching, as well as to principle and phenomena; here, it provisionally takes the phenomenal practices of the disciplinary teaching as the chapter title.
