Under "Admonition and Warning", the first section has five [parts]: first, a direct exhortation. "Laboring and unsettling both sides" means that both the penitent and the one confronted act in vain. From "Only" onward, it brings out the reason for not relinquishing: "views" means intellectual understanding; "nature" refers to the mental nature. The mouth speaks of liberation, hence it says "beyond the worldly"; actions are bound to dust-like mundane affairs, hence it says "vulgar and base." From "Now" onward, it raises the matter of death to spur and admonish. "Inevitably returning to death" means: do you suppose you can wait until death and take them with you?! "The great matter" is the endeavor of leaving the household life; "passing through lives" is another way of saying crossing over the world. From "Only" onward, it raises superior practices to deeply urge them. From "How could" onward, it introduces the subsequent text.
