Third, in the realm of sentient beings: Avīci and the peak of existence specifically point out the lowest and highest, encompassing what is between. 'Possible and impossible' may be based on the three periods of time: possible means the present, impossible means the past and future; or in the present, the five destinies are separated from one another; or among humans, the distant and near cannot reach each other; or among the near, ordinary and noble are possible or impossible, and so forth. 'And so on' abbreviates sexual misconduct and theft. 'Tathāgata' refers exclusively to Śākyamuni; this is also within its limited meaning, whereas the Great [Vehicle] takes the sands of the Ganges. 'Three causes and conditions' are the three wholesomenesses. From 'Furthermore' downward, he concludes with praise. 'Pervading the five assemblies' is because their realm-measures are the same. The 'vase of precept virtue' illustrates the reception-essence; the Dazhidulun states: 'A person who upholds the precepts obtains everything; a person who breaks the precepts loses everything. For example, there was a man who constantly made offerings to a deva seeking wealth; the deva took pity on this person and gave him a vessel called the vase of virtue, from which whatever was needed would emerge. Once the man obtained it, it complied with his desires; to the point that he became arrogant and careless, and danced upon the vase; the vase broke, and all the objects were destroyed. A person who upholds the precepts is also like this; with all kinds of wondrous joys, there is no wish that is not obtained; if he becomes arrogant, careless, and self-indulgent, he is just like that man who broke the vase and lost the objects.' 'Folds his hands' means even if he does not maintain them. 'Meritorious virtue' is non-informative [form].
