The precept on sexual intercourse. (When the Buddha was in the country of Vaiśālī, after the son of Sudinna went forth, he returned to his native village and engaged in impure conduct together with his former second [wife]; on this basis it was instituted. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'The precept on sexual intercourse was instituted in the winter season of the fifth year; the remaining three precepts were all instituted in the winter season of the sixth year.') In the title, the conventional division into three means that the principle applies generally while the texts differ. 'The principle applies generally' means that up to the end of the trainees' rules (śikṣākaraṇīya), every single one is like this; though the text may be lacking, the principle must be complete. 'The texts differ' means that in accordance with each precept, the objects and conditions differ. First, 'what is violated' separately discriminates the object; second, 'constituting a violation' is the union of mind and object; third, 'not a violation' is the absence of either mind or object. 'Briefly...' points to the extensive [exposition], intending to show that this place does not involve theoretical chapters. Since the subsequent chapter is still brief, it points again to the commentary: explaining names, the intention of instituting [precepts], the doctrinal categories of exception and prohibition, the different ancient and modern interpretations, and resolving doubts and harmonizing discrepancies are all in that text, and are mostly not cited now; or where mutual reference is needed, extracts are occasionally made to explain and penetrate the textual marks, with no other intent.
