In refuting the deluded, the first text has three parts: first, it recounts the error. She [懾] is pronounced zhi-she, meaning fear. The Sūtra of One Hundred Parables says: "A person raised two hundred and fifty cows; one of the large ones was eaten by a tiger; the owner thought: 'Since the number is no longer complete, what use is there in guarding them?' and thereupon killed them all at once." A foolish bhikṣu is also like this: having violated one precept, he treats the rest in the same way; this accords quite well with that idea. Following "How could," it directly refutes. Following "How," it shows again: the upper two lines clarify the purity of the same kind; following "Rightly," it clarifies the purity of the same designation: being steadfast and unmoving is called "solemn and intact"; following "Lower," it clarifies the purity of different designations and different kinds.
