引證中，初文。彼因波離問佛，鈔引佛答；彼云：謂檀越施與塔寺，斷彼施主福，成棄捐不受。（波羅夷，翻為棄捐；捐亦棄也。不受，即不共住也。）引《五百問》。彼云：佛塔上掃得土，棄之有罪不？答：得棄，不得餘用。引此似證損福。

In citing proof, the first text: that was due to Upāli asking the Buddha, and the Manual cites the Buddha's reply; he said: "It refers to a dānapati donating to a stupa or monastery; severing that donor's merit, it becomes abandonment and non-acceptance." (Pārājika is translated as abandonment; juān also means abandonment; non-acceptance means not living together.) It cites the Five Hundred Questions: there it says, "Is there an offense in discarding dirt swept from a Buddha stupa?" Answer: "It may be discarded, but may not be put to other uses." Citing this seems to prove diminishing merit.
