In the third [section], it states: 'If one has long owed property belonging to the Buddha, how should it be reimbursed?' The answer states: 'Simply reimburse the original property (it is repaid according to the original property; the reason is explained below), for property of the Buddha does not involve outgoing and incoming [interest], and thus no additional compensation is made. Even so, one still enters hell.' It continues by citing an origin story: 'After the Buddha's Parinirvāṇa, there was a bhikṣu who was energetic and intelligent, able to preach the Dharma and cause people to attain the four fruits of the Path (for this reason he was called a Tripiṭaka Master). Due to engaging in impure conduct with a brāhmaṇa woman, he subsequently consumed property belonging to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṅgha, totaling ten million coins (ten thousand strings [of cash] today). Later, he went to the country of Śaphā where he begged and acquired a great amount of goods, intending to return and repay it. On the way, he was bitten by a seven-step snake. Knowing that he would die within seven paces, within six paces he instructed his disciples to discharge the reimbursement and sent them back to his native land. When the reimbursement was completed and they returned to report to him, he took the seventh step, died immediately, and fell into the Avīci [Hell]. When he first entered, before suffering severely, he thought it was a warm chamber; thereupon he raised his voice loudly to chant sūtras, verses, and benedictions. Hearing this, several thousand hell beings attained deliverance. The hell wardens struck him with iron forks; when his life ended, he was reborn in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven.' The present text condenses this, hence saying 'even if reimbursed', and so forth. From 'how' onward, the author of the Transactions Manual offers a profound admonition. This is cited to clarify that even if one makes reimbursement, one enters hell, thereby demonstrating that retribution is fixed. All who hear this ought to exercise extreme caution. Yet there are foolish people who pride themselves on their lectures and learning, saying, 'If I fall into hell, I too should emerge quickly.' However, that Dharma Master was energetic and intelligent, led people to attain the Path, and personally compensated for the debt. Who today is like that, that they should rashly emulate such a sublime precedent? This shows a profound failure to understand the Patriarchal Master's intention in citing this. When latter-day students hear such talk, they must urgently cover their ears; toward the property of the Triratna, they must reverently protect it and keep away from [misusing it]. If they presumptuously boast and persist, they will bring calamity upon themselves; the Buddha cannot save them, how much less anyone else!
