In the *Daśacakra*, it first clarifies the retribution for violations. It specifically employs the four major [transgressions] as the basis for drawing in slandering [the teachings]. Entering Avīci refers to retribution in the next birth. The phrase 'such [people]' and so forth clarifies the obstruction of the Path. 'Fetters' refer to afflictions such as views and deliberations. The phrase 'falling into evil [destinies]' explains how the fetters are not exhausted. Nowadays, many study perverse emptiness, reviling the Buddhas and slandering the teachings; spreading vulgar and base words, they conversely pride and boast themselves. How could they know that a single instance of contempt for the Honoured Form leads to long submersion in dark paths, and a single instance of slighting the sacred scriptures brings perpetual falling into the forest of perverse views? The principle of karma is glaringly obvious; how could one not believe it? The phrase 'if [one upholds...]' and so forth demonstrates the benefits of upholding [the precepts]; it first seeks out the person who upholds them. The four major [transgressions] of the first division give birth to all precepts, and hence are called the fundamental ones. The phrase 'one [who...]' and so forth indicates meritorious practice. 'All' encompasses the four requisites in their entirety. The phrase 'even to the point of...' urges firm adherence. Saying 'abandoning one's life' is identical to the admonition in our Vinaya to prefer death. 'What the three vehicles rely upon and abide in' is because they are the foundation of supramundane practices. Having often read this text, I respectfully examine the Buddha's words in detail; the expressions are earnest and the principle is evident, truly sufficient to serve as a mirror. May you single-mindedly recite it in your heart to urge yourself to diligence.
