The Commentary's explanation: first, among the six sense objects, it first indicates what is stolen. 'Crawling on the chest' means snakes moving forward with their chests; 'poisons' refers to anything that harms human life; it means the various ṛṣis are able to treat the above two poisons, and hence are called masters. 'Making,' and so forth, lists and demonstrates the marks of theft: from the beginning to 'likewise' is stealing visible forms with the eye. 'Writing characters' is like talismanic registers today. 'If chanting,' and so forth, is stealing sounds with the ear. 'Stealing,' and so forth, briefly points to the three sense objects, explained by analogy with the above. 'If secretly,' and so forth, is stealing dharmas with the mental consciousness.
