大妄戒。（佛在毘舍離，時世穀貴。婆永河邊，有安居者，共相稱歎。得上人法，遂獲利養。佛呵而制。）妄語名通，加大簡小，唯局稱聖。

The precept against great false speech. (The Buddha was in Vaiśālī at a time when grain was scarce. Along the Vaggumudā River, those spending the rains retreat praised one another for having attained superhuman states, thereby obtaining offerings. The Buddha rebuked them and instituted the precept.) The term 'false speech' is general; adding 'great' distinguishes it from the small, being restricted solely to claiming to be a sage.
