In the next subsection: the Vinaya explains the exception for dreams, and in connection points out five faults; as listed in the text, up to stating that contrary to this one obtains five benefits, and so forth. However, the text only mentions faults and does not clarify the marks of the offenses; thus the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya is cited to resolve it. Now to judge this offense: if when first falling asleep one restrained the mind and then emitted in a dream, according to the Vinaya there is no offense; if one did not restrain it and emitted, upon deśanā, there are five duṣkṛtas. (That indeterminate [states] constitute karma is based on this text.) If with a distracted mind one does not emit, logically this is not the limit for constituting [the offense]; but not tethering one's thoughts violates the Vinaya and incurs a duṣkṛta; this is constituted upon first falling asleep, not an offense of the dream. Among the five, the third fault is because the Vinaya regulates contemplating wholesome teachings. The fourth fault is because the Vinaya regulates discerning the stars and the moon and focusing on the signs of dawn.
