There are six intentions behind the prohibition. The first intention applies generally to all precepts. Thus we know that a bhikṣu takes the Dharma as his companion; if he must be without the precepts, on what could he rely in his destitute solitude? The second intention: women are mostly attached [to families], which people abhor. In the third: 'not only...', etc., reveals the marks of others' suspicion and disgust. In the fourth: the fundamental sexual karma is the great source of evil, and prohibiting this is to guard against that. The fifth: yielding to fundamental greed and desire, being unable to restrain the mind. In the sixth: first, it recounts the aspiration and practice of a bhikṣu; from 'if' downward, it clarifies what ought not to be done. Once one departs from transcendence, one loses self-benefit; losing people's veneration and respect, one loses benefiting others. Once the field of merit of the Saṃgha is lost, the Buddha-Dharma is ruined accordingly, because the Triratna is extinguished. May one examine these intentions closely to alert and spur one's own mind.
