In explaining the fourth, first the marks of praise are presented; there are three. First, "proper and handsome," etc., praises the retributive form. Second, "of great caste" praises the clan and lineage; kṣatriyas and brāhmaṇas are called great castes, while vaiśyas and śūdras are lower castes. Third, from "renouncing household life" downward, it praises virtuous practice: herein, renouncing household life is the practice of detachment; keeping the precepts is the practice of halting and acting; cultivating the wholesome is the practice of having few desires; below, citing the dhūtas explains and completes the cultivation of the wholesome; the Vinaya further lists chanting, extensive learning, preaching the Dharma, upholding the Vinaya, and seated meditation, hence it says "etc." From "not..." downward, it concludes with the distinctions of the offense. There are three sentences: first, concluding with a sthūlātyaya is because one praises without soliciting. Next, committing a saṃghāvaśeṣa is because one both solicits and praises. Third, being identical to the preceding is because one solicits without praising, which then belongs to coarse words.
