In the next section, "Length and width": there are two statements of measurement: the preceding *Samantapāsādikā* is the measurement of the begging rite; the subsequent *Dharmaguptaka* is the measurement for building the hut. One span (*diś*) is two feet; calculating the figures, it can be understood. (The character *zhe* [span] should have the radical *shi* [stone], meaning stretching; the distance between the thumb and the middle finger is called a span.) If it does not reach six spans, both exceeding and [failure to] beg are absent (there should be an impediment or objection here); if within twelve spans, there is [failure to] beg but no exceeding; beyond that, both exceeding and [failure to] beg are present; if one has already obtained the rite, there is only exceeding the measure—understand it in this way.
