In mutual contamination: What is acquired on the first day is the 'contaminator'; what is acquired during the subsequent nine days are all called the 'contaminated'. This is for fear that one might think that because the material essence is large or small and not identical, they do not contaminate each other; or perhaps formerly it was held that what does not conform to the measure is not an offense, hence the question resolves it. In the first question and answer, the upper sentence is the direct answer. From 'as' downwards cites an example: taking the precept on sufficient eating, where previously sufficiency is determined by the five primary foods, and subsequent violations extend to both foods, this can serve as an analogy for the contaminated. (The old view saying both are repented as pāyattika is incorrect. Although the robes contaminate each other, the offense follows the size, and cannot be confused.)
