Twenty. (When the Buddha was in Śrāvastī, Upananda went to a village without fixed dwellings and traded raw ginger for food; furthermore, he bartered robes with an outsider, regretted it, and did not return it; because of criticism and reprimand, it was prohibited.) The name of the precept: according to the commentary, it is divided into three: collecting for profit, releasing for profit, and wrangling over a high price is 'commercial trading' (販). Taking for profit, thereby reducing the previous price, is called 'buying' (買). Releasing for profit, forcefully raising the price to make it high, is called 'selling' (賣). (Commercial trading merely collects first; the offense of returning it is the same as selling.)
