Under 'reception and use': the text of the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya lists six restrictions: first, one must not use it to replace the three robes, because originally it is not a Dharma-robe. (Under pressing circumstances, one may do so.) Not assigning it by proxy (vikappana) is because it is also not an extra robe. (Both of the above two are said regarding within the proper period; as in the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya below, once the period is exceeded, it must be received and assigned.) Not entering a river with it is out of fear that it might easily be ruined. (Below it says that for grime and sweat, an exception is also granted.) Not using it in light rain is because it does not constitute bathing. Not wearing it on a naked body is out of fear of soil and touch; śalaka is a Sanskrit term, which the ancient commentary says is of the type of a short skirt, and the Vinaya says it is an antarvāsas. 'Other old garments' refers to items such as an inner scarf. Not wearing it while doing work is because it was not originally permitted for that; permitting it to serve as a screen is because there is no harm done.
