Citing the *Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya*: "Superior methods": that text says, "You are of the caste of caṇḍālas, barbers, potters, weavers, or tanners"; reviling oneself among these is solely heavy, while reviling others has three grades, because of differences between close and distant relations. "Middling reviling": that text says, "You are of an intermediate caste" (the caste of clerks and soldiers, the caste of entertainers). "Inferior": that text says, "You are of the kṣatriya or brāhmaṇa caste"; making such statements with the desire to make the other person feel ashamed is a violation. (According to that vinaya, the former was inferior reviling and this was superior reviling, which was probably in terms of the superiority or inferiority of the castes; now the Manual transposes them, taking them in terms of the depth of the evil words; or perhaps the two characters "superior" and "inferior" were mistakenly copied before and after.) In middling reviling, reviling oneself and one's parents are both thullaccaya; one's upādhyāya and companions are both duṣkṛta; in inferior reviling, all are duṣkṛta; hence it says "each decreases by one grade". "Aside from face-to-face comparison": that vinaya does not discuss face-to-face comparison; it should be taken as following the preceding *Dharmaguptaka-vinaya*; apart from the previous characteristics, one kind is additionally added. In the note, the characteristics are briefly presented in terms of caste, and the rest should be understood accordingly.
