In the reply, the first sentence gives a general explanation. From "first..." onward, it explains specifically, first explaining in terms of the preparatory stage. This refers to the neutral state of sleep and madness mentioned above. First, it explains that retribution is incurred on account of what preceded. From "yet..." onward, it explains that when the act is properly completed, it is not retribution. Second, it explains in terms of the two retributions: general and specific. This principle applies to both types of neutral states mentioned above. "General retribution" refers to generally undergoing retribution in hell; "specific retribution" refers to specifically undergoing retribution in the other destinies. From "as..." onward, three citations are adduced as proof: the first two verify the "laxity" above, and the last one verifies the "sleep and madness" above. As for "as stated in the sūtra", it is not clear which sūtra it is. (Some point to the Sūtra on the Twelve Dhūtas, but the text is not found there.) Being unaware is a neutral mind. As for the Five Hundred Questions: it states that in the past there was a duty-distributing monk who struck a vessel with his hand and fell among the hungry ghosts. An arhat heard groaning sounds in the privy and questioned him. He replied: "Formerly in this monastery, I was a duty-distributing monk for the Saṃgha; I struck clean vessels with my hand, causing impure food to be given to the Saṃgha. I fell among the hungry ghosts, my body eaten by worms and unable to obtain even feces to eat, which is why I groan here." The arhat performed deśanā on his behalf, and only then was he able to eat feces, and so forth. "Mistaken touching" is a neutral mind. As for the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra: karma during sleep refers to such things as seminal emission in dreams, the category of five duṣkṛtas. Instructing others and one's own action are as explained above.
