In the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, the first section first matches the five kinds. Stem means branch. Core means spread-net propagated. Basil-smartweed is sweet basil. Rubbing and twisting means rubbing between both hands. The seventeen grains are: 1. paddy rice, 2. red rice, 3. wheat, 4. barley, 5. small beans, 6. soybeans, 7. broad beans, 8. peas, 9. foxtail millet, 10. broomcorn millet, 11. hemp, 12. jiāngjù, 13. shéchǐ, 14. póluótuó, 15. barnyard millet, 16. zhīnà, 17. jùtuópó (these Sanskrit terms are not yet clearly identified). Fire purification applies to all five, because the four methods of purification above are each restricted to specific objects. Next, it explains the five fruits. In the note, "two dates" means: ripe refers to those ripened on the tree; raw refers to green dates, which, having been touched by fire, are purified both inside and out, so one may include the stone. Skin-flesh refers to skin without a pit but having seeds. In the note, long pepper has a pungent taste and is fragrant. The *nài* resembles an apple but is smaller. The character 創 is pronounced in the level tone. As for 𥢶, the Zhigui says: because of its coarse chaff skin, it is called 𥢶; this fruit is the smallest, with a skin like coarse chaff; in the Qingzhong yi, it refers to pine and cypress nuts. Pods refer to water chestnuts and beans. In the note, mugwort belongs to the seed-propagated; fearing that one might think its overlapping leaves prevent fire purification from being accomplished, it is resolved on the analogy of 𥢶 and pods. From "Merely..." downward, it indicates the method of purification. For the five fruits above, fire purification also applies universally; the other purifications are each restricted, as can be found in the text.
