In explaining the fourth condition, the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya first explains the purifying declaration. Next it lists four kinds; understanding one is sufficient, and whatever is spoken is universally valid. All four saying "this is" points to the object mentioned before. The note reveals knowing the purification. Knowing pertains to the other person, while purification rests with the bhikṣu; because he understands this meaning, he is called a "pure person." From "It is not proper..." downward, the word "saying" should be added to assist it. From "If..." downward, it explains exceptions due to circumstances. Clearing a path is not an offense. The text says "unintentionally," which differs from the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya above.
