In the *Daśādhyāya-vinaya*, the first is improper in color; woolen felt is improper in material; the rest are all improper in manufacture. 'Single-sleeved' means baring one shoulder. 'Double' means a lined garment. 'Two-sleeved garment' means attaching only two sleeves, covering only the shoulders and collar, without front panels or a hem. 'Pocket garments' are like hats, socks, gloves, and the like. In the *Dharmaguptaka-vinaya*, first [the text] shows specific prohibitions. The first five are improper in form, all being secular garments; the rest are improper in material, all being non-Buddhist garments. *Zhe* refers to short trousers; *xingteng* are leg bindings. 'You all...' and below cites the general prohibition. In the Vinaya, because the group of six committed transgressions, [the Buddha] prohibited items one by one as they arose; when they repeatedly made other garments, causing such bothersome complications, the Buddha prohibited them all at once, which is why he said 'evading my prohibition' and so on. Punishing according to the Dharma means treating it as a duṣkṛta.
