In [the section on] leather, the first heading has three parts: first, prohibiting keeping it. *Ju* is pronounced with the fanqie *du* and *da*; the *Classic of Mountains and Seas* says it is an animal shaped like a wolf. 'Moreover, not...' and below prohibits sitting on it; 'except for jeweled couches' means that even in secular households it is not permitted. 'One must not beg...' and below explains the exceptions and prohibitions regarding begging for and using it. 'Door pivot' is what is nowadays called a door socket. 'Curtained carriage canopy' was anciently explained as a roof on a carriage, low at one end and raised at the other (or like modern bed-curtain frames). In the Vinaya, because the group of six made carriage canopies like kings and ministers and the laity criticized them, it was prohibited. In the *Three Thousand [Rules]*, 'skilful support' is used for cultivating meditation. 'Tanned leather' is leather that has been smoked. 'Pointing to the remaining methods' refers to its five features: first, one foot wide; second, eight feet long; third, hooks at the ends; fourth, three layers; fifth, not using gold hooks. It is passed from behind to the front to hook around both knees, binding them securely so they do not move. Since this is not for everyday use, it must be worn in a secluded place. In cold, snowy lands socks are permitted, which is suited to this region.
