In [purification] facing another person, indirect [purification] is divided into two. In the former presenting the procedure, there are three parts: First, the owner of the property relinquishes the item, out of fear of committing an offense of holding surplus. Saying 'indirect' is to distinguish it from genuine [purification]. Below 'He...', the recipient asks in return. Because it is called indirect, it does not exclusively belong to oneself. Below 'Venerable Sir...', it later clarifies that the recipient remotely entrusts the owner of purification, returning it to the owner of the property to safeguard it for him. The Commentary says: 'This has three transfers: the owner of the property handing it over for purification is the first transfer of purification; the recipient of purification remotely entrusting it is the second transfer of purification; the owner of purification, without knowing it, returning it to the owner of the property is the third transfer of purification. Both purify the intention of greedy attachment; therefore it is called purification.' Below 'Externally...', next it cites the circumstances of prohibition. The three Vinayas are the *Mahīśāsaka*, *Daśādhyāya*, and *Mahāsāṃghika*, in succession across three prohibitions. The first prohibited doing it face-to-face: that is, [the other person] holding fast to it before the owner of purification and not returning it, which gave rise to disputes. Below 'Consequently...', next it prohibited informing him. Below 'Furthermore...', later it prohibited needing [to inform him]. He thought it was his own property, so he feared committing the offense of holding surplus.
