Regarding the substance of the robe: in the first section, the first three are made clear by adding a note. Menstrual blood, women in childbirth, gravesites, and thoroughfares are all things despised by people; shrine grounds, mountains, marshes, forests, and wilds are where people sacrifice to deities to seek wishes and abandon them: both of these have no owner. The text lacks the ninth, robes of royal office; this is an omission in textual transmission with no other reason, meaning that when someone receives an official post and changes their clothing, they discard the old ones. (The ancient [view] that this is not practiced in this land and is therefore omitted is incorrect; are things like being chewed by oxen practiced in this land?) "Moreover, not below" next shows the exceptions and prohibitions. Later it says that one must not take robes from shrines; in the previous ten kinds, they were those blown away by the wind or carried off by birds to a separate place.
