The Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka text appears in the eighth [fascicle]. This was the vow made by the Tathāgata on the causal ground when he was the Bodhisattva Mahākāruṇika. Among the five, the first and fourth are powers to eliminate evil: the first eliminates karmic [obscurations], and the fourth halts disputes. The remaining three are powers to generate good: the second obtains future fruits, the third brings about present joy, and the fifth increases authority and power. In the fourth, "mutually opposing each other", the sūtra states: "If there are sentient beings who do not comply with one another, full of enmity and jealousy, fighting and warring with one another, down to the time of mutual combat, if they can be mindful of the kaṣāya, they will cause those sentient beings to attain compassionate minds, soft minds, minds without enmity, and so forth." In the fifth, "overcoming others", that [sūtra] states: "If sentient beings, in fighting, warfare, or litigation, in order to protect their bodies, venerate, revere, and make offerings to the kaṣāya, always keeping it with them, they will cause those sentient beings to be constantly victorious wherever they are, with none able to oppress them; even in fighting, warfare, or litigation, they will achieve peace and liberation," and so on. Truly, when a person with shame and conscience wears the robe of compassion and suddenly gives rise to mindfulness, contentious feelings are halted; therefore bhikṣus should deeply reflect upon the Buddha's words. If the poison of anger should arise, one ought to observe one's own body: having donned the kaṣāya, how could one be without shame and remorse? "If I..." below expresses sincerity in seeking confirmation. After the Bodhisattva made this vow, Ratnagarbha Tathāgata extended his golden arm, patted the Bodhisattva's crown, and praised him: "Well done, well done, Great Man! What you have spoken is a great precious treasure, a great virtue. After you attain enlightenment, the kaṣāya will be able to accomplish these five noble merits."
