In stating the intent, the first two lines state the efficacy. The prolongation or shortness of life is brought about by past causes; hence it is called "retributive life." Nourishing and keeping alive is precisely "supporting"; "support" means propping up. The next two lines reveal the number. In responding to illnesses based on their substance, they do not exceed these four. Below the text, the names are explained, all established according to time. Among timely medicines: it says "the matter is compliant," in contrast to the above [period] from morning to midday, because this is the time for eating. "In accordance with the Dharma," in contrast to the holy teachings mentioned above permitting consumption, because it does not violate the teachings. Among untimelies: "outside the time" means after midday; this shows the meaning of untimeliness. Among seven-day [medicines]: "capacity" means functional efficacy, because the medicine's power lasts up to seven days. Among life-long [medicines], first the name and meaning are shown: that which is permitted to be consumed for a long time is precisely life-long. Next, three marks are listed. Later, the treatise text is cited to separately confirm the third; hence what is now undertaken must be anticipated to last until the end of one's retributive [life].
