七日藥中,初科。當字去呼。資益故當食,除患故當藥;簡餘三藥,各專一用。如食飯等者,明其當食也。不令麁者,誡其多貪也。《伽論》糖漿,今時謂水糖是也。未捨自性,謂未轉變也。《僧祇》加脂,則有六種;兼上糖漿,則有七矣。熊音雄,似豕;羆音碑,似熊而長頭高脚為異。
In the seven-day medicines: the first section. The character dāng is read in the departing tone. Because it nourishes and benefits, it is equivalent to food; because it eliminates illness, it is equivalent to medicine; distinguishing it from the other three medicines, each of which has only one exclusive use. "Like eating boiled rice," etc., shows that it is equivalent to food. "Not letting it be coarse" warns against great greed. As for the sugar syrup in the Saṃghabhedavastu, nowadays it is what is called liquid sugar. "Not having abandoned its inherent nature" means not having transformed. The Mahāsāṃghika[-vinaya] adds animal fat, so there are six kinds; combining with the sugar syrup above, there are seven. Xióng is pronounced xióng, resembling a pig; pí is pronounced bēi, differing in that it resembles a bear but has a long head and tall legs.
