In the fifth [section], regarding the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: first, it clarifies successively making additional formal acceptances. 'Dòng' (move) is like 'zhuǎn' (shift). 'If long' means there is still an excess remaining. In the interlinear note, an ancient master maintained that for seven-day [medicines], repeated formal acceptance is not permitted; [however,] based on the above point regarding alteration of the substance allowing an additional formal acceptance, one knows that when the substance is distinct, it is not termed 'repetition.' The rest is as explained in the fifth gate. 'If...' below clarifies differences in preparation and acceptance. First, it explains the method for ghee. The requirement to strain it with fine cotton cloth is out of concern that it might become mixed with timely food. The method of keeping it in mind is because of concern over forgetting, causing one to remember and know it. 'If one obtains...' below next explains the method for oil. What is said to be 'as explained for ghee' means it is the same regarding straining clean, making a mental note, and so forth. Obtaining sesame is self-evident. 'If a bear...' below thirdly explains the method for fat. It is also first strained and prepared, and either received with an additional formal acceptance before noon or kept in mind because there are circumstances; thus all these refer back to the above. 'Obtaining sugar cane,' etc.: sugar cane applies to both untimed and seven-day [medicines]; fruit is restricted to untimed [medicines]. Regarding the Samantapāsādikā, 'On the eighth day, one commits an offense of forfeiture': this clarifies that upon keeping it in mind, it immediately enters into the limit of the rule. 'Zuān' means to decoct. Question: For making a mental note previously, and when it is later accomplished as medicine, is it necessary to perform an additional formal acceptance? Answer: Previously one merely retained it in memory, not specifying medicine and illness; the wording is broad and general, so in principle one must certainly perform an additional [acceptance]. If so, how many days are permitted when the medicine is completed in the interim? Answer: Following the Samantapāsādikā above, it naturally becomes clear. In the Vinayamātṛkā, the phrase 'perform the procedure' applies to both formal acceptance and keeping in mind; neither is accomplished.
