Under 'Timing and Quantity,' first it distinguishes them separately in relation to the flavors. Among the six flavors, the two flavors of salty and bland are absent. Among the sweet flavors, licorice is a lifetime [medicine], whereas honey and the like are seven-day [medicines]. Among the sour, fruit juices are untimed [medicines]. Among the pungent flavors, ginger, pepper, and the like are all lifetime [medicines]. The bitter flavor does not enter into timely foods, and so it exists only among lifetime [medicines]. Next, it summarizes them in contrast to the seven-day [medicines]. Because the substance of seven-day [medicines] is distinct and equally edible, everything outside them is called timely. 'From...' below reveals the meaning of timely. If one speaks of timely and lifetime [medicines], both cover all six flavors. However, timely medicines slightly cover pungent and bitter, lifetime [medicines] lack sweet and rich [flavors], untimed [medicines] are mostly sweet and sour, and seven-day [medicines] are strictly limited to the sweet flavor; one should investigate them in this way.
