Regarding the four stages of non-timed [medicine], in the first: the "eight troubles" refers to eight kinds of faults. The first five pertain to defiled touch and apply to offenses by both oneself and others; the latter three relate to formal reception and are discussed only with respect to oneself. The sixth is not receiving, and the seventh and eighth are losing the formal reception. The seventh is spoken of provisionally with respect to afternoon; before noon there is no fault, as distinguished in the note. The note to the eighth is what was stated in the Madhyamaka treatise previously under the section on transforming substance, meaning that if fruit syrup turns into sweet vinegar, one loses the formal reception.
