Next, in discussing them separately: the marks of offenses are mingled, so they are gathered by category. Hand [reception] prevents two offenses, identical across the four medicines: not receiving is a pāyattika; improper touch incurs a duṣkṛta. Verbal reception has four distinctions: verbal authorization for timed medicine merely substitutes for hand reception and does not extend the time, so its offense is identical to hand reception; for the other three medicines, exceeding noon loses reception, where non-reception is a pāyattika and improper touch is a duṣkṛta, these two offenses applying to all three medicines; overnight leftover is one pāyattika, applying to the latter two medicines; the three including overnight storage inside are not excepted for seven-day [medicine], and are restricted only to lifetime [medicine]. (In the Precept Commentary, that the five offenses of lifetime [medicine] lack overnight storage inside is a textual error.) The note refuting the ancient [interpretation] is as found above under the applicability of offenses in protecting purity.
