In the next section, the *Mahiśāsaka-vinaya* and *Daśādhyāya-vinaya* both eliminate what is not according to Dharma. An unbaked bowl is one that has not yet been fired. "Made by the Buddha himself": that vinaya says: "The Buddha was in the country of Soma and made unbaked bowls, ordering a potter to fire them into gold bowls, and next into silver bowls. In all cases he said, 'If the king knows, he will think that I can produce gold and silver treasures,' and so ordered them to be buried. Later, he fired an iron bowl and the Buddha ordered it to be used, calling it the Soma bowl, taking its name from the country." From this we know that the regulation did not stem from ordinary deliberation, just as the previous chapter says: "The Buddha instructed Ānanda to cut and tailor the three robes." Truly, because the path-methods of the ancient Buddhas cannot be known by anyone else unless personally demonstrated by the Buddha, all who uphold and maintain them should deeply rejoice in themselves. In the *Daśādhyāya-vinaya*: The *Karma Commentary* says: "Using diverse jewels for vessels confuses one with householders; wooden bowls confuse one with heterodox practitioners; stone bowls belong only to the Buddha. The bhikṣu is separated from both, and uses only clay and iron. This is because it departs from all confusions, saves trouble, and is easy to obtain." Afterwards, the *Mahiśāsaka-vinaya* is cited to determine the marks of the offenses above. Furthermore, the *Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya* is cited to show the reasons for the offenses. To judge all bowls generally: white copper and wood incur a sthūlātyaya; the rest are merely not according to Dharma, and in accordance with this incur a duṣkṛta.
