In the third section, the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya has six clauses. First, it prohibits improper use. From 'If...' onward, next it prohibits carving. The Indian form of the character wàn is 卍, the virtue on the Buddha's chest, which people often use indiscriminately; today some embroider it on the corners of robes, which is permitted by the teaching. From 'Broken...' onward, thirdly it explains mending and repairing. Plastering two parts means: an almsbowl generally has upper, lower, and middle divisions, making three parts. From 'Must not place...' onward, fourthly it explains placement. 'Smoking' refers to smoking the color. Saying that it is 'still ruined' means: having used the above four materials to cushion it, the color is still ruined, only then is one ordered to plaster the bottom of the almsbowl with pewter. From 'Must not mix...' onward, fifthly it explains the method of washing. Cow dung is valued in the Western Regions, but is not used in this land. From 'If by hand...' onward, sixthly it explains carrying it. 'The mouth facing outward': in the Vinaya, because a bhikṣu had the bowl's mouth facing his ribs and, walking on the road, encountered rain, slipped, fell to the ground, and injured his ribs, causing illness, the Buddha said one should not do so. 'Clashing' refers to two bowls striking each other. The Five Hundred Questions explains that when hanging an almsbowl, one should wrap it in a cloth and suspend it away from the wall; one should not let its mouth face the wall, also fearing damage to its color. Below, quoting the Sudarśana-vinaya resolves the earlier text's failure to specify whether it goes over the left or right shoulder.
