In the first section, the Samantapāsādikā explains the four uses by comparative illustration based on facts: the first two are ordinary persons, distinguished by maintaining or violating [precepts]; the first is only ordinary persons bound to the earth, while the second encompasses both internal and external ordinary persons; the latter two are noble beings, distinguished by being trainees or non-trainees. "Use by theft" means rashly receiving without virtue, which is identical to robbery. "Use by debt" means one must surely repay another. "Incurring an offense" means violating the prohibitive teaching. "Indebted to gifts of faith" means requiting the karmic retribution. "Use by relatives and friends" means it partly belongs to oneself. "Use as master" means attaining autonomy.
