The Matṛkā fully clarifies both persons, subject and object; the intention is to reveal that if one who receives the offering lacks virtue, he is unfit to receive it. First, it screens out virtues and deeds. It fully lists three kinds: dhyāna and recitation are for one's own practice, while managing affairs benefits others. The "three deeds" are the three kinds above. From "Bhikṣu" below, it warns to measure and moderate, again in three: first, it urges with reference to future retribution. The text clearly states that even [consuming] one's own food leads to falling [into lower realms], the intention being to show that a bhikṣu has no "own food." From "Why" below, it interrogates and demonstrates the intention behind regulating and moderating: one should respectfully comply. From "Giving" below, next it urges with reference to breaking and violating [precepts]. Saying "able to receive and able to digest" conversely clarifies that those who break the precepts are capable of neither. "Recompense is small" is stated in terms of conditioned [merit], or there may be none at all. In the note, the first line concludes the above, and the latter line points to the preceding—namely, the text of the *Dharmaguptaka-vinaya* in the second section. From "Sufficient" below, third it urges with reference to giving rise to afflictions.
