In the seventh: in that sūtra, because in Kātyāyana's native country there was a king with wrong views, the Buddha commanded Kātyāyana to go and convert him. The king gave him coarse food and sent someone to ask: "Was it to your liking?" He answered: "The power of food simply makes it plentiful and sufficient." Later he gave him fine food, and when asked, he answered as before. Afterwards, the king personally asked: "Regarding the food I offered, without distinguishing coarse from fine, why do you say in both cases that it was plentiful and sufficient?" Kātyāyana then answered with a verse, as cited in the *Manual*. Later, when the king gave coarse and fine food to non-Buddhists, they harbored anger and joy. The king then gave rise to faith in Kātyāyana; hence it says "verified and known," etc. In the verse, the first two words are the Dharma; from "As" below are all similes. Generally, a carriage must have oil smeared on both ends of the axle, merely aiming for smooth rotation and transport, without distinguishing whether the grease smells fragrant or foul.
