In citing proofs: the Da zhidu lun first clarifies the Buddha's intent in his praise. "Path practice" encompasses the holy paths of the three vehicles; "worldly pleasure" is the painful cause of the five desires. The four reliances and the dhūtas are the fundamental proscriptions; looking ahead to the later permissive teaching, it therefore says they "serve as the foundation." From "There are..." below, it shows the exceptions and permissions. The words "causes and conditions" mean that for the middling and inferior faculties, the arising of the four kinds of permissive teachings—robes, food, dwellings, and medicines—all have conditions. "When there is no alternative" is because it was not the sage's original intent. "Other matters" refers generally to all permissive teachings.
