In explaining the name: the Samantapāsādikā, in its first two lines, translates the name. "Shaking off" means casting away objects so that none remain, taking its name from a metaphor. From "It means..." below, it explains the meaning. Affliction is delusion; stagnation and attachment are karma. In the Shengtianzi Jing: under "a devaputra" in that sūtra, there is the word "questioned." The sūtra only indicates the meaning, which corresponds quite well with the treatise's name. First it shows the marks of the practice. "Shaking off" is the wisdom that serves as the antidote; desire, anger, and delusion are the afflictions to be cured. As for treating each individually, it says: shaking off greed and desire, shaking off anger and hatred, shaking off ignorance and delusion, shaking off the three realms, and shaking off the six internal and external sense-bases (the six dusts are external, and the six sense-organs are internal); the present Manual summarizes them in a phrase, hence it points this out here. From "Also..." below, next it praises the practice and explanation; first it praises the practice, hence it says "can skillfully." From "Thus..." below, it praises the explanation. "Neither grasping nor relinquishing" means being free from the two graspings of existence and non-existence regarding dharmas; "not cultivating" means not grasping the practice being cultivated; "not [realizing]" means not grasping the path that is realized. It says: there is not the slightest dharma to be grasped; since there is nothing to be grasped, there is nothing to be relinquished; moreover, there is neither cultivation of self nor of other, and thus there is nothing to be realized and attached to. (One does not see one's own cultivation, nor does one see another's cultivation.)
