In the third [part], the first [passage] indicates being slighted by others. "Because of..." below next clarifies one's own loss. "The Dharma being extinguished in the person" is the opposite of the aforementioned appearance, mind, deportment, and other matters; giving free rein to body and mind, internally and externally lacking the Dharma, it is therefore extinguished in one's person. "If..." below concludes with encouragement. The note explains the method of receiving kings and ministers: first, it teaches external decorum. Not welcoming or escorting them is to avoid bending the Way. Not sharing a couch is for fear of intimacy and disrespect. "Moreover..." below admonishes the inner mind. However, this is spoken with regard to bhikṣus who internally have real virtue and kings and ministers who both harbor deep faith, and so it may be practiced; nowadays, both the monastics and laity are deficient and shallow, and it cannot be done according to the text. Even if one possesses the Way, one should still observe the capacities; matters depend on the moment, adapting as appropriate according to circumstances; measure the breadth of their capacity, examine the height of their rank, observe the depth of their faith and joy, and consider the familiarity of personal relations. Therefore, the *Book of Rites* values following custom, and the *Book of Changes* praises according with the times. If one clings stubbornly to one extreme, one will certainly encounter disasters and calamities; there are many such cases in ancient and modern times, and worldly affairs make this clear.
