In the next section, first is the admonition to listen. "Duotuo" means "thus" (tathā); "eqiedu" means "come" (āgata); "aluohe" means "worthy" (arhat, worthy of offerings); "sanmiaosanfotuo" means "correct and fully awakened one" (samyak-saṃbuddha). It also lists three titles to generate faith and devotion. Below "to the end of [one's life]," it lists the marks. Sexual misconduct means violating another's wife. The Abhidharmakośa has four: first, another's wife; second, one's own wife in improper passages (the main passage or the mouth passage); third, an improper place (not inside a bedchamber); fourth, an improper time (during pregnancy, nursing, or while observing the eightfold fast). Among the five, the first four are natural precepts (prakṛti-śīla), generated towards sentient objects; the last one is a regulatory precept (pratiṣedha-śīla), generated towards non-sentient objects. Consuming alcohol leads to negligence and can produce the four faults, so it is specifically prohibited. Below "is," the entrustment has four parts: first, entrusting careful protection; second, encouraging the cultivation of merit; third, instructing to observe the fast; fourth, teaching the dedication of merit. The three months of the year are the first, fifth, and ninth months; the karma-mirror of the underworld revolves and shines upon the Southern Continent, and if there are good or evil deeds, they all appear in the mirror. (Some say the heavenly kings inspect the four continents, and these three months face the Southern Continent; others say these three months are when evil spirits gain power, which is why people are instructed to cultivate good.) The six days of the month: in each of the two halves, śukla and kṛṣṇa, there are three days. According to the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa, on the eighth day the heavenly kings' messengers descend, on the fourteenth day the heavenly kings' crown princes descend, and on the fifteenth day the heavenly kings themselves descend to observe the good and evil of sentient beings; the twenty-third, twenty-ninth, and thirtieth days are also like this. (In short months, in accordance with the poṣadha, the first day of the next month should be used.) Observing the fast means either receiving the eight precepts or simply observing the fast—eating one meal before noon, and not eating improperly after noon. (Nowadays, many eat vegetables and do not curtail the evening meal; although this is not fasting, it is still better than eating meat. Also, some drink water continuously for twenty-four hours and consider it a pure fast; this is a heterodox technique. All sentient beings depend on food to live; merely not exceeding noon is the Buddha's orthodox teaching.)
